Fire & Other Emergency Plan – September 2023
This document details the fire and emergency evacuation, lock down procedures for these premises. Staff must ensure that they are familiar with these procedures and act upon the requirements.
Premises Plan
Append a plan of the premises showing marked fire exit points, the location of firefighting equipment and the routes to be followed in an evacuation.
Action on discovering a fire or other emergency
Fire
Set off fire alarm at nearest point
Staff to take class outside to playground with laminated register.
AD – take signing in books & emergency contacts, phone and check KS1 toilets / first aid room
JB - take out phone
LW – check changing rooms / photocopy rooms and KS2 toilets
SS - to check upstairs
BG - to check early years
Staff to count children and check against register.
Staff to ensure children are quiet in order to hear any instructions
Kitchen staff to ensure they all vacant kitchen
If safe, SLT to check building for location of fire and inform fire service
Evacuation
If staff are told ‘evacuate’, by any member of staff;
Staff to take children out of school by nearest exit
If child is in toilet / away from the class - children are told, reminded to leave the building with a class and then they will find their teacher when safe
KS2 to use side access road, KS1 use path to top of drive
All staff and children to make way to The Coppice
AD & LW to take emergency file
Lockdown
A whistle will be sounded by staff who have seen danger. All staff to sound whistle as soon as they hear a whistle
Children to hide under tables
Staff to put table in front of door and lock door
Children who are out of classroom are to stay where they are or go into closest classroom
Children in hall to go behind stage
Reception children to under tables
Staff and children to stay hidden until member of staff or police let them know it is safe to come out
Summoning the fire & rescue service
Office staff or member of SLT to call fire service and/or police.

Describe issue
Show fire service fire alarm system to locate where fire is
Staff absences
All staff to be made aware of emergency procedures.
New staff to have procedures in Colleague Handbook.
Supply teachers to be made aware of procedures when greeted into school.
If office staff away, other office staff to take on roles and SLT to check toilets / changing rooms
Fire drills / emergency drills
Fire drills take place 4 times a year at various times of the day. Small & Tall to carry out fire drills in the morning and evening each term. Feedback given to all staff.
Lockdown / evacuation procedures to be practised each term at various times. Feedback to all staff.
Visitors and contractors
Emergency procedures to be communicated to all visitors and contractors when they come into school.
Assemblies – fire procedures explained to parents / guests at the beginning of each assembly
Co-ordination with other premise occupants
The Coppice is our emergency place. We are the emergency place for The Coppice.
Fire alarm test
The site technician checks fire points, doors and lighting each week, each point is on a rolling programme.
The fire alarm system is checked 4 times a year.
All people will be treated equally including those within the nine protected characteristics.
