Newsletter – June Week 2

Dear Parents / Carers,
What a busy week we’ve had in school with all of our sporting events and our open evening for new families to Friarswood.
Thank you to all of the staff who stayed late last night for the open evening. It was a huge success and your support really meant a great deal to the parents who came.
A massive thank you to Sofia in Year 5 and Arthur in Year 3 for being brave and talking in front of so many adults. I was so proud of you both!
Cricket
Our cricket team had a very successful day on Monday. They took part in the finals of the local cricket tournament and came joint 2nd. A huge well done to Jackson, Nevaeh, Zak, Joshua, Marc, Bertie, Sidney and Leon.
A massive thank you to Mrs Sharman for organising this along with Mrs Bebbington and Mrs Dean for helping with transport.
Sport’s Days
All of our children have had their sport’s day now. It’s been so much fun watching the children take part in the races, show resilience at all times and have fun with their friends.
A massive shout out to Leo in Year 3 – what a pocket rocket! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a child run so fast all the way round the track.
And another shout out to all of the parents who took part in the races – you were all stars in our eyes!
Swimming Lessons
This term we have been focusing on life saving skills. The children have been learning about SAFE –
S – spot dangers, A – advice (use the posters, signs, flags, lifeguards to get advice) , F – family & friends (always make sure they are with you and you’re never alone), E – emergency help (999 or 112)
The children have been repeating this in every lesson. They have been practising several methods of lifesaving skills and they have been told many times to never go in the water unless an adult is with them. Having heard about a 6 year old child drowning in a pool whilst on holiday a few weeks ago (they were on their own), we will be repeating this over the next few weeks.
Absences from school
We are having quite a few absences at the moment which is quite unusual. Children have had so much time off due to the pandemic, which is why it is so important they attend school everyday.
We have received phone calls about children being ill but then find out that the child has been away / on holiday or is actually fine. Children are not very good at keeping secrets and they always tell their friends or the teachers about why they were away. We also find out from other parents. Asking children to not mention a holiday or to tell a lie puts a lot of stress on the child which isn’t fair.
Any absences as mentioned above will be treated as unauthorised, which may result in a fine.

How to Set Up Gaming Consoles to Prevent Impulse Purchases
Here is a link to help parents to set up parental controls to stop children accidentally spending a fortune of your money on online games and apps.
Instagram – New Parental Controls
Currently rolling out within the UK right now, Instagram have launched some new features which I’m sure many parents will welcome. These new features include:
- The ability to see how much time their child spends on Instagram.
- Awareness of who their child is following and who is following their child.
- Notification if/when their child reports someone and the type of report that was made.
- The ability to set specific times when parents can limit their child’s screen time.
The features are enabled on Family Centre, where a parent can supervise their child’s account. Information about the new features can be found HERE. Information about Family Centre on the page isn’t obvious, it’s at the top of the page in small font.
Uniform Swap Shop
You will hopefully be aware of our shop. It is under the veranda every morning. If you need any uniform, please feel free to take what you need. If you are donating uniform, please can this be in good condition.
Mental Health Support for Families
In our main entrance, there are many leaflets about support. We also have information on our website. If you ever feel that you need help, then please contact either myself or your teacher and we will try our best to support you.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Thank you so much for your support this week. It’s been really good to see so many of you at school.
Take care and stay safe
